Paravion Press ‘New York’ Edition on sale now!

Illustrations for Walt Whitman`s poem, Crossing Brooklyn Ferry http://paravionpress.org/

This brilliant boutique publisher has just printed their latest edition of short texts inspired by New York City. I have illustrated one of the books in the edition named ‘Crossing Brooklyn Ferry’ by Walt Whitman a 19th century poet, essayist, and humanist. Whitman’s ability to capture the American character has led critics to dub him “America’s Poet.” His work feels ahead of its time.  Read it!

Artist in Residence Exhibition, Mexico

Artist Residency Exhibition, Mexico 2011 from William Bock on Vimeo.

My final weeks in Guzman were taken up with creating work for an exhibition at the University. After my walking pilgrimage to Talpa de Allende, I wanted to make work that captured the experience  of walking at night through the mountains. The themes of pilgrimage, landscape and people inspire the works. The exhibition includes a 6 metre long painting, ‘Peregrinacion‘ (Pilgrimage) painted with Mexican food colouring powder and water.  Included in the exhibition was  a lovely little projection room helped set up alternative tourism students which showed photos and films from our theatre project in Lagunillas. Claudia Llanes opened the exhibition alongside the deputy head of the University.

Lagunillas Theatre Project, Mexico 2011

Los Mojados from William Bock on Vimeo.

Today is the day of the final parade. The following images show moments during the procession as well as the students decorating the spaces in Lagunillas and getting into costume. I was very inpressed with the way the students got their act together and delivered a great performance for the community. Given the miniscule time to create this performance, I felt they did exceptionally well. Films to follow…..

Discovering Lagunillas

Photo by Jorge Martinez taken in Lagunillas 2011

During mid April, together with the students from Alternative Tourism and another teacher, Elena Carbajal, we explored  Lagunillas by looking, listening, touching, smelling and even tasting. Students indiviually met locals and talked to them about their experiences of living in this community, listened to their  stories which included legends based in the area and what they do/did for a living. We sampled some of the local produce, like cakes baked in hand made adobe ovens and visited where the cows are milked. The milk was then sold in the local market.  Living is basic here and the population barely reaches 400. As quickly becomes evident, like in so many small and poor communities in Mexico, their economy and their population is dwindling because many families are illegally emigrating to America in search of money and a ‘better life’. This issue was very poignant for Lagunillas and something the students picked up on amongst others during the few days we spent devising the theatre event. I realised the importance of building trust with the community in order get to the heart of their life stories. Unfortunately we had very little time with them but i could see the exciting possibilities given more time with them.

Pilgrimage to Talpa de Allende, Mexico

Three weeks ago I took the walking Pilgrimage from Ciudad Guzman to Talpa de Allende, a town famous for the stories and heavenly revelations of the Virgin of Talpa. Talpa is almost 7 hours drive from Guzman (roughly 300km) but our walking pilgrimage took 4 and a half days, through the ever changing landscapes in the state of Jalisco. A truely awesome experience both physically and emotionally. In many ways the pilgrimage gave me not only a deeper understanding of Catholicism (from a non Catholic perspective) and religious fervor in Mexico but it also showed me another extraordinary facet to modern Mexican life. Here are some photos I took along the seemingly endless route. I will update this post with more information very soon since there is still a lot to tell!
